Two Nottinghamshire women caught littering in Arnold have been ordered to pay almost £1,300 in fines and court costs between them, by Nottingham Magistrate Court on Wednesday 24 September.
Susan Smith, of Thomson Gardens, Top Valley, was spotted by Gedling Neighbourhood Wardens dropping a cigarette butt on Front Street, Arnold, in March this year. When approached by the wardens her friend picked up the cigarette butt, but Smith was issued with a £50 fixed penalty notice, which she failed to pay.
Smith did not attend Nottingham Magistrate Court but pleaded guilty by post. She was given a £350 fine, ordered to pay £265 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Stephanie Kinash, of Melbourne Road, Aspley, was caught on CCTV in May dropping a polystyrene cone on Front Street, Arnold. The camera operator notified the Neighborhood Wardens who approached Kinash and issued a fixed penalty notice, which she also failed to pay.
Kinash failed to respond to the court summons or attend the hearing but was fined £350, ordered to pay £295 court costs and £15 victim surcharge.
Cllr Ged Clarke, Portfolio Holder for Safe and Sustainable Neighbourhoods at Gedling Borough Council, said: “The Council takes littering very seriously and these two cases have received some of the highest fines we have seen for this type of littering, but we are very pleased with the outcome. This sends out a strong message to people that we do not tolerate litter bugs in Gedling.”
