200 help to fight crime
Online Alerts a success
Nottingham Evening Post report by CLAIRE CARTER (February 2009)
HUNDREDS of people have signed up to an online crime-fighting scheme. Some 200 people have registered with the Neighbourhood Alert system in The Park since its launch in September. When people register, they are assigned a unique code. This allows t.hem to send and receive information from the police. The scheme has already had some successes in relation to a spate of car break-ins, and resulted· in increased police patrols in areas where graffiti and anti-social behaviour were a problem.
Beat manager PC Ian Taylor said: "They are the eyes and ears of the estate. A lot of people nowadays don't have the time to be sitting around in meetings but with this system you can easily communicate with a lot of people all at once." PC Taylor said it was "only a matter of time before the system led directly to an arrest." He told how he sent an alert over two people who were riding around on mopeds. The information he received back resulted in the pair being arrested.
The scheme also allows people to find out how police work affects them. Recently, a man arrested for burglary confessed to 11 other offences, four of which were in The Park: Residents were told via the alert system. He added: '''The majority of people know what's going off. If not them then their neighbours. A. non·emergency may not be reported but on here they can just let me know what's happening."
The scheme is run by Notts Police and The Nottingham Park Estate Ltd group. Visit www.thenottinghamparkestate.co.uk for details
